The sitemap checker finds a site’s XML sitemap, counts its URLs and tests a sample of pages to see if they load.
A clean sitemap helps search engines find and refresh your important pages.
How to use it
- Enter a domain or the full sitemap URL.
- Press the orange button.
- Check the URL count and the status of the sample pages.
What a healthy sitemap looks like
- Only pages you want indexed.
- Every URL returns status 200.
- No redirected, deleted or noindex pages.
- Listed in robots.txt and Search Console.
Tip
If the sample shows 404 or 301 codes, your sitemap is out of date. Most SEO plugins rebuild it automatically once you fix the settings.
Questions
Where is my sitemap?
Common places are /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml and /wp-sitemap.xml.
Do small sites need a sitemap?
It is not required, but it helps new pages get found faster.
Why only 25 URLs tested?
Testing a sample keeps the tool quick and still shows if there is a problem.
