Spam Score is a Moz metric that shows the percentage of sites with similar features that Google penalized or banned. It does not mean a site is spam. It means it shares traits with sites that were.
Check it before you buy a guest post, accept a link, or buy an old domain.
How to use it
- Type the domain you want to check.
- Press the orange button.
- Look at the Spam Score together with DA, traffic and domain age. Log in free to see Moz numbers.
What the numbers mean
- 1% to 30% is low to medium and usually fine.
- 31% to 60% needs a closer look at the site and its links.
- 61% to 100% is high. Be careful, especially if traffic is also low.
Tip
A site with high spam score but real organic traffic can still be okay, and a low spam score site with no traffic is not automatically good. Read the content, check who links to the site and look at its traffic before you decide.
Questions
Does a high spam score hurt my site?
Not on its own. It is a warning sign. If many links pointing to you come from high spam score sites, review them and consider removing the worst ones.
How do I lower my spam score?
Remove or disavow links from obvious spam sites, keep your site complete with contact and about pages, and build links from real, relevant sites.
Why does spam score show n/a?
Moz does not have enough data for very new or very small sites, so no score is returned.
